Clear Out Your Junk!

April 27, 2010

Most of us are quite comfortable with the idea that it is a good thing to do a spring clean around the house once in a while. The thing we don’t tend to do so often is to do the same type of “Clearing Out The Junk” of our business environment.  New opportunities and clients can only come into our life if there is room for them.  Imagine your wardrobe full of clothes.  You are less likely to go out shopping for more clothes when your wardrobe is already bulging and overflowing with other clothes.  (Some husbands may disagree on that!) On the other hand, once you clean out the wardrobe, you might be immediately inspired go out and add something new to your collection.  It is the same in business.  What is often the case is that we are so ‘full’ with junk, that we either don’t see these new opportunities, or we are too crowded to be able to take advantage of them when they appear.

Recognise that you need to have a clean out. It becomes evident that it is time to clear the junk when you become despondent with your clients, you start to make excuses as to why you should not do something, you stop enjoying what you are doing, you don’t have enough time to get everything or you are finding it difficult to attract new clients.

Take Action – Once you recognize a clean up is needed, you must take action.  Take inventory of what it is that is keeping you bogged down.  It might be old friends that no longer serve your best interests, jobs or favours for others that are not making the best use of your time and expertise, re-setting of boundaries on your time. If you work from home, it could be that you need to clean out and re-organise your office space so it is a reflection of a productive and active mind.

Evaluate your intentions – Be clear on what it is you want to achieve from this point forward.  How many new clients do you want to attract?  What are your priority projects and what is the deadline for them to be completed?  What new connections and relationships do you want to build?  Clarity on your purpose will allow you to be open to seeing the new opportunities that will flow to you.

Perhaps set aside half a day or even an hour or two to have a good clean out of your environment and then follow it with evaluating your new intentions.  You will be amazed at how more productive and profitable you will find this exercise to be.

Let me know what experiences you have had when you have ‘cleaned out the junk’.

It has been long awaited, and today Facebook released some small changes in the way they want things done.  At first, it does not seem to be much different, but when you delve a little deeper, the changes are MASSIVE!

The first thing that has changed is the way people join Fan Pages. Previously you would click a button that says “Become A Fan” and now the button says “Like”. The thought is that it is lighter and consistent with the language they use elsewhere on Facebook. I would tend to agree.

This may seem like a small change, but could it be just the start of something huge that will change how people use social media forever?

I think the changes are for the better, but let me  give you my take on the situation, and let you know where you can learn more about it too.

“Like” connects pages in Facebook and websites OUTSIDE of Facebook to your profile

Your profile has significance on Facebook for a couple of reasons.  Initially, it is how others find our more about you, and from a marketing perspective, if you are involved in Facebook Advertising, this profile information is what enables you to target your advertising to the relevant gender, geographical regions, likes and dislikes, interests etc.

It is important to remember though, that many people do not update their profile that they initially used, even years after they started on Facebook so it is not always the most up to date information.  This can mean that as an internet marketer, you may not be making best use of your budget if the target audience is not accurately reflected.

Facebook is starting to create relationships with partner sites that will let you “Like” something on those sites (eg music, video clips, news stories etc). Once you indicate your “Like”, this preference is automatically linked to your profile. This now means that marketers who are paying for advertising on Facebook will have up to date, current info to use to target their ads, rather than your “Likes” only being reflected for a short time in your Facebook Newsfeed.  This is very exciting news for marketers!

So What Is There To Fear?

A concern of many people today is around their privacy.  It is clear that every time you add specific information about yourself onto the internet, you are at risk of being vulnerable.  This means you need to use a certain amount of sensibility.  It should be obvious, but the recommendation is to only share things that you want other people to know.

You can also choose which things you want people to see and which ones are private – so nothing has changed there.

How Does This Change Facebook’s Standing?

With this change, Facebook is moving one step closer to Google. Human nature will rise and folks will always find social interaction and popularity far more interesting and significant that simply searching by keywords.

Something Else You Should Know About..

Individuals current set up and control Pages (or Fan Pages).

Facebook is now creating Community Pages . These pages appear to be the equivalent of search results for the social media and the world web. The pages are linked to Wikipedia and include a news stream gathered from throughout the web. Facebook controls these pages rather than individuals.  I have no doubt that in a short period of time SEO experts will be delving into how to understand the algorithm they use (just like they do for Google now).

What is important for you is that you are able to “Like” these community pages (really just search results pages) and this will link them to your profile.  This is something else that will become a powerful marketing tool in the near future.

So What Do You Do Now?

It appears as thought there are still some tweaks coming from Facebook, but in the meantime:

1. Revisit your profile – Be sure you are projecting the image you want the world to see.  Some things might disappear so go on over and check out what is showing up for you and edit it if necessary.

2. Reconsider what you are already linked to - Some of these you may have linked to without thinking about it too much. You may want to look more closely at what your choices say about you.

3. Community Pages – Facebook may be sending you links to new pages.  Look at them from a new angle – see them from a marketer’s point of view. Take a moment to consider how your results might show up on those pages.

4. Wikipedia – I believe Wikipedia will begin to play a huge role within the Community Pages framework.  Consider whether you can add definitions to your area of expertise and gain exposure?

5. Try A Facebook Ad – Have a go at placing a Facebook Ad.  It seems that it is not as complex as Google Ads so it would be wise to get some practice under your belt so that as the ball really starts to roll, you have a handle on it all.  A great way to target your audience.

Let me know your comments. Always love to get your feedback.

A question I often ask my target market is, “what’s your biggest challenge with building your business online?” And one answer I get frequently is this: “How do I make my website earn money?” If you’ve got a business online or offline, then you must have some sort of web presence. It may be that [...]
